Curatorial RemarksIn June of 1895, various churches, historical societies, newspapers, and townspeople were invited to an elaborate visitation at the Old Scots Church (Marlboro, Monmouth County), and Old Tennent Church (Manalapan, Monmouth County), founding bodies of the Old Tennent Presbyterian congregation that formed in 1692. This event was known as the "Boyd - Tennent Pilgrimage," in honor of Reverends John Boyd, John Tennent, and William Tennent.NotesReverend John Boyd (d.1708) preached at the Old Scots Presbyterian Church, and is recognized as the first official pastor of the Old Tennent Church congregation. John Tennent (1707-1732), the congregation's third pastor, preached at both Old Scots and the Old Tennent Church, built in Manalapan in 1753. John's brother William Tennent (1705-1777) filled his brother's shoes, and went on to preach at the Old Tennent Church for over four decades.
