DescriptionA pair of circular lapel pins with pin backings: (.1) is inscribed in black letters on a white ground "AIRCRAFT OBSERVER / 89 / A.&M. K. POST / FREEHOLD, N.J." (.2) features yellow lettering on a blue ground, reading "AIRCRAFT WARNING SERVICE / VOLUNTEER OBSERVER," with a red silhouette of a twin-engine airplane centered on white ground.Curatorial RemarksThese pins were worn by Burt Jackson of Freehold, a Karagheusian Rug Mill employee who served as an aircraft spotter during World War II. Because the mill buildings were some of the highest in the area, an aircraft spotting station was manned round-the-clock during the war.
