DescriptionA small bowback Windsor settee with twenty turned spindles supporting the bent back. Shaped arms are tenoned into the back, and end in scrolled terminals. They are supported by four spindles and a bamboo turned post. Four splayed bamboo turned legs are connected by an H-shaped stretcher assembly consisting of two bulbous turned side stretchers and a bamboo turned medial stretcher. The settee retains an old brownish-red painted finish.Curatorial RemarksThe settee is an unusually short bowback Windsor example, resulting in only four legs that are set further toward the center of the seat than is commonly found. That renders the bench somewhat unstable if a single person is seated on it at one end or the other.
