DescriptionA finely proportioned and detailed stand with a dish top. It is equipped with a birdcage mechanism that allows the top to swivel. Two cleats attached to the birdcage have a pair of pivot hinges so that when a brass catch on the underside of the top is released the top tilts into the upright position for storage. The central vase-turned pedestal ends in three cabriole legs dovetailed into the pedestal and reinforced with an iron spider screwed to its underside. The legs terminate in small pad or "snake" feet.
Curatorial RemarksSmall stands with similar vase-shaped pedestal turnings appear frequently in the greater Freehold area of Monmouth County. But this exceptional example, with the ability of its top to tilt and swivel, is more complex and finely executed than most others.NotesThe label on the underside of the top that reads "WHS.52" no doubt refers to William S. Holmes (1876 - 1948), a long-time Freehold antiques dealer, the first Mayor of Freehold Borough, and President as well as first Director of the Association. It may be some kind of inventory number.
