DescriptionA quilt in the Rose Wreath pattern, with nine blocks set on point alternating with eight smaller blocks set on point, with a single small appliqued central rose blossom. The blocks are appliqued in red and green linen, forming wreathes with three roses interspersed with rosebuds. The flowers include some stuffed work (trapunto) as well as wool crewel stitching in herringbone and buttonhole stitches. The border includes a meandering vine applique with four appliqued rosebuds at each corner. The backing is plain white cotton encasing thin cotton batting, stitching in outline and crosshatch quilting. A narrow white straight grain binding is sewn along all four edges.Curatorial RemarksThe Rose Wreath quilt pattern was popular during the first half of the nineteenth century, with many variations on motifs and arrangement. The unknown maker of this particular Rose Wreath quilt incorporated linen for the applique pieces, possibly indicating a date in the very early 1840s. The use of stuffed work also harkens back to mid and late 18th century whole cloth quilts.
