DescriptionA singular spur with smooth arms and circular stationary studs. The spur is complete with a D-shaped buckle and a small 8-pointed rowel.
Curatorial RemarksThis spur belonged to Colonel Asher Holmes (1740 - 1808), commander of the First Regiment Monmouth Militia during the Battle of Monmouth, fought on 28 June 1778. In a letter to General Washington, the Marquis de La Fayette noted that the militia commanded by Holmes was "above all expectation I could have formed of them." Holmes is buried at the Holmdel Baptist Church Cemetery in Monmouth County.NotesThe Association also owns an epaulet worn by Holmes, as well as the Colonel's penknife.
