NotesThis small pen knife was carried by Asher Holmes (1740 - 1808), Colonel of the First Regiment of the Monmouth County Militia and participant in the Battles of Germantown, 4 October 1777, and Monmouth, 28 June 1778. Following the War, Holmes was a Justice of the Peace and then High Sheriff of Monmouth County. Two other items belonging to Asher Holmes were donated at the same time: an epaulet and a spur (accession numbers 75A and 75C).
