DescriptionA drum-shaped canteen, with thick staves held with two 3/8" iron bands. Three 3/8" tin shoulder strap retainers are held in place under the iron bands. At top, a 7/8" diameter hole is drilled, though the canteen's stopper and/or mouthpiece are no longer present.Curatorial RemarksThis canteen was originally from the military collection of Joseph A. Yard, who collected militaria from both the American Revolution and the Civil War. This particular canteen's history is unknown, and this style is somewhat difficult to date precisely, although canteens of this type were carried during both the American Revolution and the War of 1812.NotesAccession records indicate that the canteen was originally inscribed "Wm. Stanurd," but did not indicate whether the name was carved or scratched into the canteen itself or was tagged with the information. Any original inscriptions on the canteen have worn away.
