Curatorial RemarksA native of Great Britain, artist John Bradley was active in New York City, Staten Island, and New Jersey from 1831 to 1847. The portrait is signed “J. Bradley 134 Spring Street. NY.,” as is the companion portrait of Crawford’s wife. Bradley worked at that address from 1844 to 1847. As late examples by this artist, the impact of photography on portraiture can be observed. Colors that were once clear, warm and bright in Bradley’s earlier work are now darkened and subdued. NotesA son of William Crawford and Rebecca Patterson, James Patterson Crawford (1815 - 1874) was born in the Bowne-Crawford House at Crawford’s Corner in Holmdel. In 1836, he married Margaretta Hull Bowne at Old Brick Reformed Church. They became the parents of eight or ten children. Crawford’s occupation was as a farmer in Middletown. By the early 1870s, however, the family relocated to Brooklyn. He died in Holmdel in 1874.
