DescriptionA simple patchwork quilt in the Checkerboard pattern, constructed of solid plain weave red and white cotton small blocks arranged 18 by 28, with a wide solid red cotton border. The quilt includes a backing of plain weave white cotton, with a plain straight grain red cotton narrow binding. The quilting is simple, the stitching lines running diagonally across the quilt.
Curatorial RemarksRed and white is arguably the single most popular color combination for quilts through the nineteenth and well into the twentieth century. This quilt falls under the category of "utility quilts," made quickly and simply for extended use to keep family members warm. The unknown maker's efforts were clearly appreciated, as the quilt shows extensive and prolonged washing and wear.
