DescriptionHalf-length portrait of a woman facing right in a painted oval. Wears a white lace day cap, white neckpiece, and a brown dress. Background is a mottled lighter brown. Four outside corners are dark brown.
Curatorial RemarksThis portrait is a nearly contemporary copy of an original by John Trumbull still owned by descendants, although less faithful to the original than the companion portrait of her husband, Abraham Brinckerhoff, by the same unknown artist. However, in this work, the direction in which the sitter is facing has been reversed, and some costume details left out.NotesDorothea Remsen (1747 - 1825) was born in Brooklyn, a daughter of Peter Remsen and Jane DeHart. She married Abraham Brinckerhoff in New York City in 1772. They became the parents of four sons and three daughters. Dorothea died at Newtown, Queens, at the age of seventy-eight.
