DescriptionA quilt of multi-colored printed cotton calico fabrics hand-pieced into the "Eight Pointed Star" pattern, also known as "Star of Lemoyne." The blocks are straight set, nine across and eleven down, for a total of 99 small blocks, with narrow plain red cotton strip sashing. A thin batting, possibly wool, is finely quilted with both outline and stencil stitch motifs. The quilt backing is of plain white muslin. Both front and back are turned together at the edges and stitched with what appears to be machine stitching.Curatorial RemarksQuilts such as this colorful and lively Eight Pointed Star made good use of even the smallest scraps of printed cottons. The patterns of the fabrics used in this quilt appear to date all from the 1840s and 1850s. The maker used narrow red cotton as the borders, or sashing, between all the blocks for pleasing visual unity.NotesThis charming and lively Eight-Pointed Star quilt was made by a member of the Vanderveer family
