DescriptionA cat sitting on its haunches on an irregular oval base. Front legs are separated and head is turned to the right of the body. The eyes, eyelashes, and toes, are all indicated by deep incisions in the figure.NotesThe mottled glaze technique utilized on this figure creates an interesting display of color. The brown, yellow, and green glazes on this cat layer together to create a unique design. Ceramic cat figures were made in many areas both in Europe and in America. The origin of this particular figure, with its quirky features and bold glaze combination, may have come from English potteries. Similar figures were also produced in the Ohio River Valley in the mid 19th century.
