DescriptionSucrier, or sugar bowl, with cover, in paneled ovoid shape. Molded floral chain border along collar. Cartouche on either side of sucrier, of classical figures (A) standing woman by obelisk and (B) mourning woman by flower-draped urn. Molded ring "handle" sprigs on either end of panel. Stylized anthemions along lower third of bowl. Lid has molded floral knop above border of alternatig foliate scrolls and paneled crenelations.
NotesRobert Sowter established his pottery in 1800 in Mexborough, South Yorkshire. Sowter soon took William Bromley as his partner. In 1808 Robert Sowter moved to Hull and acted as a distributor for his factory's products. Sowter & Company produced a variety of wares, mainly pearlwares (banded, mocha, shell-edged and transfer printed) and feldspathic stonewares. Many Sowter pieces were apparently marked with numbers only, possibly corresponding to block molds used. A number of S. & Co. sprig molded designs are closely related to those found on Turner products, possibly purchased from Turner during its period of financial stress.
