DescriptionDepiction of a white-painted story and a half house with a three bay facade, center door, two end chimneys, and eyebrow windows for the second floor. The end gable contains one window for the first floor, and one window for the second floor. A leanto section appears at the rear of the main structure. The house is surrounded by flower beds in bloom, bushes, a hedge, and other plantings. A large tree towers over the dwelling in the rear, and a dirt road with a sidewalk forms the lower right corner of the painting. A male dressed in brown trousers, a blue shirt, and a wide brimmed hat stands in front of the main entrance. He is holding a piece of equipment such as the handle of a lawn mower.
NotesIdentified by the artist as the oldest house in Manasquan, Monmouth County. Josephine Yard Des Anges was a longtime resident of Asbury Park and Avon-by-the-Sea, Monmouth County. She was born in Trenton, Mercer County, on 10 August 1864, a daughter of Henry S. Des Anges and Caroline E. Yard. Josephine studied art in Philadelphia, and then maintained a studio and taught art in the Asbury area for many years. She was an active member of a number of Monmouth County art groups.
