DescriptionA charcoal drawing after Sir Edwin Landseer of a stag with a large rack of antlers facing left in a wooded and mountainous landscape background.NotesThe earliest known surviving work of art by Gulick, done at the age of twenty. The Monarch of the Glen is an oil on canvas painting of a Scottish red deer stag completed in 1851 by the English painter Sir Edwin Landseer (1802-1873). It was commissioned as part of a series of three panels to hang in the Palace of Westminster in London, and was one of the most popular paintings throughout the second half of the nineteenth century. Reproduction steel engravings of this iconic work sold very widely. Many businesses used Monarch of the Glen as their logo and in advertising. The original painting was purchased in 2017 by the National Galleries of Scotland.
