DescriptionView along a roadway shown on the extreme right edge of the painting, with a double row of trees to its left lining both sides of a grass covered walkway. A portion of the left hand side of the walkway is fenced off with an iron fence that surrounds a graveyard. Beyond the cemetery is a small school building with an entrance porch on the right and a cupola on the gable end above it. The sky is blue with a few white clouds. Some red plantings beyond the far fence are in bloom.Curatorial RemarksDaniel Ward Seitz was a Hartshorne descendant in the ninth American generation. He left the contents of his home in Locust, Monmouth County, to the Monmouth County Park System when he died in 2008.NotesThe historic Hartshorne Family Burying Ground was set aside by the will of Richard Hartshorne in 1722. It is located on the north side of Kings Highway in Middletown village. Descendants continue to maintain and use the private cemetery, the latest interments having taken place in 2011. The Franklin Academy building on the eastern edge of the cemetery was erected in 1836 as a private academy. Over the years, it has been used as a township school, the village library, a township branch library, and since 1950 as a private residence.
