DescriptionDepiction of a two-story stone mill building on the far side of a mill stream and pond. A stone bridge over the creek appears on the extreme right edge of the painting, and a two-story, five bay stone house in the distance with a smaller wing to its left. The house has a gray roof, and four red brick chimneys. Trees frame the structures to the left and right, many of them displaying fall foliage. The foreground consists of grass, rocks, and bushes. The sky is blue with a hint of white clouds.
NotesKnown historically as the Kennedy House and Mill, this property is actually located in Greenwich Township, southern Warren County, but only two miles west of Bloomsbury, Hunterdon County. An old stone grist mill dating from the early nineteenth century shows in the left middle distance beyond Pohatcong Creek. The stone residence, a large two-story, five-bay structure built ca. 1815 to 1825 with a two-story wing to its left, sits further back to the right of the mill. A stone bridge abutment on the right edge of the painting dates from 1838. In the early 1950s, this historic site was owned by Captain and Mrs. Charles Lehr, who did much to assure its preservation. It was entered onto the State and National Registers of Historic Places in 1996.
