DescriptionAn interior view of a parlor showing a fireplace on the left surrounded by a carved mantlepiece, closets to its left and right, and a curtained window to the right of the right-hand closet. Furnishings include a large red-upholstered rocking chair on the right, a smaller child's rocking chair to its left, a two-drawer stand behind the adult rocker with a red-shaded lamp on it, a portrait hung above the stand, a painting over the fireplace, two porcelain and two glass items on the mantlepiece, an iron floor lamp to the left of the fireplace, brass andirons, and blue, gray and red striped carpeting on the floor. A large Christmas cactus sits in front of the window.NotesAn interior view of the southeast corner of the front parlor in the Gulick farmhouse on Holland Road in Middletown, Monmouth County. Among the items shown in the room are a "Good Night" teapot on the mantlepiece, and a child's rocker to the right of the fireplace. Both are still owned by Gulick descendants. The adult rocker appears in several other paintings by Gulick, and also in photographs showing the artist sitting in it.
