DescriptionAn unfinished quilt in a variation of the Strip pattern. Hundreds of narrow rectangular strips of fabrics are basted to a variety of cotton backings, all sewn by hand, with the resulting 73" long strips then sewn to each other to create fifteen vertical panels. The raw edges of each strip are sewn with blanket stitch, as are all four edges of the quilt panel. The fabrics appear to date from the mid 1850s through the early 20th century, and include woven cotton plaids and stripes of the 1850s, "seaweed" pattern prints of the 1850s and 1860s, small geometric pattern prints of the 1890s, a few larger floral prints suitable for home furnishing use, several cotton sateen prints from dress goods, and other prints which could be dated anywhere between the 1860s and the 1890s. The backing strip panels are constructed from a number of sources. They appear to have been taken from old sheeting material, with marks of wear and fading, some linen, perhaps 18th or early 19th century, and several panels of woven cotton damask in a dark tan or light brown, possibly tea dyed, which may date to the early to mid 19th century. The quilt has been left unfinished. There are no signatures or inscriptions.
