DescriptionA woman's day dress of lightweight woven cotton, printed in reddish orange and black on white in a small geometric repeat. The dress is one piece, constructed with a dropped waist and two pleated skirt tiers. The dress has a deep V neckline with a foldover collar with a whitework embroidered cotton collar edging. The front of the neckline is filled in with whitework embroidered panel, edged with lace along the top edge and including a narrow single vertical ruffle at center front. The panel is tack sewn along the proper right side, with a series of snaps along the left. The sleeves are elbow length and slightly puffed, edged with white lace upturned cuffs.Curatorial RemarksDresses of this type were popular for day and work wear, suitable for hot weather. Inexpensive cotton prints were easily washable and quite practical. Women could purchase these garments in local shops as well as from mail order catalogues such as Sears, Roebuck & Company, where they retailed for as little as $1.50. This gown includes a removable front bodice panel, which may have been made from an older 19th century chemise or other undergarment, as the whitework embroidery appears to date from that time.
