DescriptionTea caddy, ovoid shape, with low relief scenes of (A) three men smoking, drinking over barrels and (B) smokng pirates with two asssitants, bundles at left. Scenes separately by exuberantly painted trees and foliage in brown and green. High domed lid, ovoid with knop in form of man leaning on barrel. Medial border of green and brown vines with yellow flowers.NotesThis tea caddy is one of the "Pratt-type" wares. These wares, made at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries, are decorated with a distinctive palette of drab blue, olive green, brown, yellow, ochre and dirty orange, usually with relief scenes of bucolic subjects. While Pratt wares are associated with Felix Pratt (1780-1839) of Fenton, it is unlikely that he is responsible for the large body of similar wares. Other potters, including Wedgwood, Barker and Tittensor, all produced Pratt-type wares.
