DescriptionA small cylindrical vase of buff earthenware, with a dramatically flaring rim. The vase's bright white tin glaze is ornamented in bold shades of yellow, blue, green, and red with the profile figure of an elegantly dressed woman on the left and the profile figure of a man on the right. The couple is depicted facing one another, with a lively floral and foliate spray separating the couple. A band of blue scrolls runs along the bottom of the vase, while a band of red encloses the inscription "FS W PVOR." A similar floral and foliate vertical vine is painted along the back of the vase.
NotesThis brightly colored trumpet-shaped vase commemorates the marriage of Frederica Sophia Wilhelmina (1751 - 1820) to William V of Orange (1748 - 1806) of Holland. Frederica was the daughter of Prince Augustus William of Prussia. The couple married on October 4, 1767. After their marriage, Frederica became deeply involved in the political conflict in the Netherlands beginning in 1781. William V was the last stadtholder of the Dutch Republic. William and Frederica went into exile in London in 1795.
