DescriptionWoman in a black dress with white lace collar and day cap tied with ribbon. Sitting on a black upholstered sofa, she is wearing a coral necklace, and holding a small red leather book in her left hand.
Curatorial RemarksNothing is known about the subject of this portrait, although it is an engaging likeness in a folk-art style. It is a companion work to the portrait titled Man with Newspaper (1994.580). How or when it entered the collection remains a mystery, although the portrait does appear in interior photographs of the museum taken in the mid-1970s.
