Curatorial RemarksThis cloth doll historically represents "Aunt Sophronia," based on a praline merchant in old New Orleans, Louisiana. New Orleans’s now-signature praline candy was one of the earliest street foods in America, and a means for emancipated black women to make a living prior to the Civil Rights era. The praline is a symbol of rich black culinary heritage and city tradition in New Orleans.NotesThis doll belonged to Eleanor Hesse of Red Bank, Monmouth County. The Hesse family operated Hesse's Ice Cream Parlor.Collections
