DescriptionA small circular medal of bronze, with an image of a shield in the center of the obverse. Above the shield, a hand holds a flaming lamp aloft, with foliate branches flanking the shield. Around the edge of the medal is the inscription "WESTOVER / SCHOOL / COGITARE / AGERE / ESSE" in separate banner panels. On the reverse, identical banner panels contain the same inscription, with the name "ANNE PEACOCK" engraved in the center of the medal.
Curatorial RemarksThe Westover School is a girls' prepatory school founded in 1909 in Middlebury, Connecticut, still in operation today. Anne Peacock, the apparent owner of the medal, has not been firmly identified, although at least two Anne Peacocks appear in Connecticut records during the early and mid 20th century.NotesThis medal was found among the World War I medals collected by Robert Hartshorne (1866 - 1927). Born in San Francisco, Robert was one of three children of Benjamin Minturn Hartshorne (1826 - 1900) and Julia Norton Hartshorne (1838 - 1969).
