DescriptionAn elaborately carved crest rail features two mirror image C-scrolls with a foliate center motif, and a bead along its bottom edge. The rear stiles of the chair include a baluster turning under a long columnar turning, and large ball finials with nipples. Four half balusters form the back of the chair. They insert into a shoe that is beaded on its upper edge, and with a pendant drop in the center of its chamfered bottom edge. The front legs include baluster turned elements above and below the medial stretcher, which is tripartite in form with a center reel flanked by two balls and ending in conical terminals. The side stretchers are bulbous turned with two scribe lines in the center. They, too, have conical terminals. The rear stretcher is plain dowel turned. The rear legs are square in profile, and the early seat is of woven rush. The chair is painted black.
NotesAn adhesive tape label on the underside of the seat reads, "Property of Mrs. J. A. Haskell." A second tape label states, "Bought from Lawshe Nov. 1935." Wilford R. Lawshe (1855 - 1942) was an antiques dealer from Trenton, Mercer County.
